Berrett-Koehler Publishers: A Paradigm of Inclusiveness and Stewardship
An interview with the founder of B-K (6 min.)
Berrett-Koehler Publishers (“B-K”) is an independent book publisher dedicated to a visionary mission: Creating a World that Works for All. Based in San Francisco, B-K is founded on an unconventional approach to working with authors much more inclusively than traditional publishers, working collaboratively with them in the editing and production of their books. This has earned them enormous loyalty from its authors.
The core of B-K’s approach is stewardship, which it defines as “a deep sense of responsibility to administer the company for the benefit of all of our ‘stakeholder’ groups: authors, customers, employees, investors, service providers, and the communities and environment around us.”
Started in 1992 as a business book publisher, B-K books promote progressive leadership and management practices, socially responsible approaches to business, and humane and effective organizations. For its commitment to the heart, mind, body and soul of humankind it received the International Spirit at Work Award in 2008.
An independent publisher, B-K is considered by people who are familiar with the firm and its culture to be the most progressive business book publisher in the world.
B-K believes that to truly create a better world, action is needed at all levels–individual, organizational, and societal. They now publish books that appeal to all three levels, subsequently adding its “Currents” and “Life” imprints, thereby expanding to its audience and appeal.
