Pachamama Alliance Works to Have Andean Countries Incorporate Rights for Nature into their Constitution
The Pachamama Alliance and Fundacion Pachamama (FP), its allied foundation in Quito, Ecuador, had groundbreaking success in 2008 in championing the inclusion of legal “Rights for Nature” in Ecuador’s new Constitution — the first nation in history to incorporate such a provision. This shifts nature and natural systems from the realm of merely property to fundamental rights-bearing entities.
In partnership with the Community of Andean Nations, FP has now initiated a campaign to have Rights for Nature adopted into the legal structures of the other Andean nations of Columbia, Peru and Bolivia – within the next four years. FP is also participating in building a worldwide initiative through the consolidation of an international network for Rights for Nature.
