Question of the Week: Who Will You Become?

Posted on May 19th, 2010 by

Planet Earth

We invite you to participate with FOUR YEARS. GO. community members in discussion around our Question of the Week.

Planet Earth

As events unfold in this precarious time on earth, this time of great opportunity, each of us is forming ideas about how we will respond, what we will do and who we will do it with. Our creativity is unlimited, but our time to act is not.

Who will you become in the next four years that you could not have imagined yesterday?

Vision of the Four Years. Go. Question of the Week

The vision of the Four Years. Go. Question of the Week is to ignite a conversation about what is ahead in our lives and in the world. We intend to spark your curiosity about your role in this emerging planetary moment. Deep inquiry can bring us each into full contact with our personal stake in creating a just, sustainable and fulfilling world, however it may be obscured beneath illusion, grief, conflict, paralysis or cynicism. We want to clear away the obstacles to unearthing the collective intelligence that we need to truly co-create a different world in four years, not just talk about it. We want to hold a conversation that stimulates, that disturbs, that lights fires and opens hearts and minds in every corner of this conscious living system that we are. Join us on this journey for the next four years. Every voice is welcome.

Ideas on Using The Questions of the Week

I can think of two things–or two sides of the same coin. I will have to look more closely and carefully at all the ways that I am complicit with the dominant paradigm that we call business as usual. I can imagine that changing some of these things will be uncomfortable, difficult choices. And the other side of that is to deliberately, publicly and actively creating the new paradigm. The part of that that I didn’t really think about yesterday is the public part-being out there is a bigger way.

I will become a permacultor. Me and my family have engaged in a new adventure which will end in 2014. By then (I hope) I will have learned everything which needs to be learned in order to design a sustainable home for me and my family, and maybe we will by the time have our own orchard which will provide us with our own food…

Great points you guys make on your video presentation.
However you left out the one and most important thing that most
refuse to talk about …. It is so obvious yet NOBODY ever talks about it.
    And that is overpopulation !
Yeah I want to see the cheetah run and not a bunch of condos in the African savannahs …
So how about out the next four years we DON’T reproduce ! And instead introduce
birth control and even tax benefits for people with out kids since we cost less and don’t have a huge and continously growing “carbon foot print ”
    Let’s be real here !
People ruin the planet so let’s make less of us !

I will finish school and become a cook working towards the promotion of the locavore movement. By supporting local farmer and co-ops we reduce our carbon foot print or support our local economies. Eating organically is great however, most organic foods are shipped into most super markets from around the country and the world leaving just as big of a carbon foot print as regular meats and produce. Even meat that has been certified as “organic” is still farmed using the same military style, feed lot farming techniques used for non-organic meats. So get to know your farmer, shake the hand that grows your food and support your community!

I don’t know who I will become, but I think I know who I need to become: I will become a vocal and committed leader, finding ever better ways to communicate, or perhaps more importantly inspire folks to the recognition of the transformation that is unfolding, and needs to unfold, such that humanity successfully makes the transition from being a damaging influence on the planet to being a beneficial one.

I am going to become an eco-ranger in part of a cooperative I intend to create. The cooperative will be creating vegetable gardens for those requiring them. People with these gardens will be able to exchange veges for other veges. Transportation of goods will all be done on velomobile. The compost for the gardens will be created out of green waste from the clients property. Their lawns will be mowed with an electric mower that is transported around on the velomobile. Clippings from the lawn will go into the compost. A cookbook with recipes for the vegetables grown in the garden will be created. The whole project will be vibrant, sustainable, new age and compelling. The whole cooperative will have a business structure created as a work of art – its structure will be reflecting the rhythms found in permiculture. The structure will be painted, drawn, photographed, filmed, modelled and made to look aesthetically pleasing. It will be more than a set of words on a paper.
